iPhone Unleashed -- Carry the Force in Your Hands

Released this week for the iPhone, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed introduces the on-the-go iPhone gamer to the world of the Secret Apprentice. As the story goes, you are the Starkiller: a secret apprentice raised by Darth Vader and trained to become one of the most powerful Force-users ever.

Developed by THQ, the iPhone version of the game pushes speedy action to the sidelines and brings the over-the-top Force powers into direct control. As the game opens, players are brought in to the storyline, given orders, and set off to carry them out. During the early levels, Starkiller spends his time training, and the game begins by teaching the player how to wield the Force.

Since the iPhone has no buttons, controlling Starkiller is done entirely through a sequence of gestures. Each gesture represents a different Force power, with the more complex gestures producing more complex actions. Early on, the ever-present Force Grip is the main destructive weapon used. Lifting victims into the air then tossing them aside is as fun as it ever was, as is the ability to deflect weapons fire with Starkiller's lightsaber.

As the levels progress, Starkiller comes face-to-face with the Jedi he has been tasked to kill. Utilizing the Force powers learned and practiced throughout the levels, players must figure out how to defeat their enemies by learning the pattern of attacks and vulnerabilities with each foe.

Those who own iPhones are in for a graphical eye candy treat. Fully rendered enemies, ships, and powers set against beautifully painted backgrounds will leave anyone in awe -- and give the iPhone user yet another way to show off their device. Couple that with the amount of time you can spend playing -- thanks to the massive story and endless 'Challenge' mode, this incarnation of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is well worth the $9.99 price tag.
